Mulberry Madness in Al-Ahsa: A Burst of Color and Flavor

Get ready, folks! Mulberry season has officially arrived in Al-Ahsa governorate, painting the fruit and vegetable markets with vibrant hues of red and black.

But these small, juicy fruits are not just a treat for the taste buds – they pack a powerful punch of health benefits too.

The season is short and sweet, starting after the winter chill and lasting for about a month. The current harvest boasts a bright red color, but don’t be surprised to find blue or purple varieties as well. When fully ripe, mulberries are sweet, but during the earlier stages, they offer a tangy twist.

Farmers and consumers alike are smitten by the allure of mulberries. Prices vary based on ripeness and size, ranging from SR5 ($1.33) to SR15 ($4) per half kilo, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

These versatile fruits are not just for snacking – they make a delightful addition to cakes, ice cream, and various dishes. The juice is a hit among many, and you can even freeze the berries for later enjoyment.

Dr. Hossam Al-Din Hussein Mahmoud, a fruit science professor at King Faisal University in Al-Ahsa, shared insights on the different types of mulberries grown in the region, including red, Iranian, Kashmiri, and American varieties.

Research at the university’s College of Agriculture and Food Sciences aims to catalog all the different strains and varieties of fruit in Al-Ahsa, shedding light on the health benefits of mulberries.

Considered a superfood, mulberries are packed with antioxidants, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They are known to support healthy blood sugar levels, reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes, and offer anti-inflammatory properties thanks to their high anthocyanin content.

But wait, there’s more! Consumption of mulberries is also linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, decreased blood cholesterol, improved skin health, and better heart rate regulation. It’s no wonder these little berries have captured the hearts and taste buds of many in Al-Ahsa.
