KAUST has announced that the partnership with the foreign company includes funding for two crucial communication programs at the university. The first program focuses on Free-Space Optical communications, while the second centers around developing Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS).

FSO communications utilize lasers to transmit signals through space, air, and wireless detectors. On the other hand, RIS technology provides a solution to signal loss in urban settings with essential reception stations on building rooftops. Both technologies are deemed essential for the advancement of 5G and 6G communication structures.
Empowering 6G Access: Addressing Signal Loss and Weather Conditions
With 6G boasting the highest frequency signals yet (at least 100 gigahertz), the research collaboration aims to address signal attenuation due to weather conditions. By studying weather effects on signal transmission, a comprehensive database of weather conditions in the Kingdom will be developed to mitigate communication outages and optimize station placements.
