In a thrilling announcement, Christie’s has revealed their upcoming spring sale of “Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds including Rugs and Carpets.” The event will take place in a live auction at the prestigious British auction house’s London headquarters on April 25.

A Diverse and Curated Selection

“This season the sale offers a curated selection of 261 lots including four unique collections,” Christie’s shared in a statement. “Illustrating the breadth of craftsmanship across 10 centuries, works date from the 10th century to the 20th century and cover a diversity of artistic traditions.”

Exquisite Artistic Treasures

The collection features a wide range of artistic treasures such as paintings, ceramics, metalwork, works on paper, arms, textiles, and rugs and carpets from various regions of the Islamic world, tracing the historic Silk Route that connected China to the West.

Rare Private Collections

Among the highlights are early Iranian ceramics from a private American collection and Persian and Indian paintings from the renowned art specialists Charles and Regina Slatkin’s collection. This includes a rare piece by the Bukhara artist Mahmud Muzahhib.

Sultans of Silk: The George Farrow Collection

The carpet section of the auction features the remarkable “Sultans of Silk: The George Farrow Collection,” showcasing over 40 finely woven silk carpets. As Christie’s described, this collection is a comprehensive study of late 19th and early 20th-century silk rug weaving, meticulously gathered by the late George Farrow over four decades.

A Passion for Silk Rugs

George Farrow, a British collector of silk rugs, dedicated himself to assembling one of the world’s most significant collections of 19th and 20th-century silk carpets by Armenian weavers. His expansive collection comprises a variety of silk weavings from different origins.
