Finland’s Foreign Minister Discusses Strong Ties with Saudi Arabia and Recognition of Palestinian State

In a compelling interview with Arab News, Finland’s Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen delved into the robust relationship between Finland and Saudi Arabia, the importance of recognizing the Palestinian state, and Finland’s remarkable achievement in being ranked as the top country in the 2024 World Happiness Report for the seventh consecutive year.

Building Strong Partnerships

Valtonen expressed enthusiasm about the growing trade ties between the two countries and highlighted Finland’s keen interest in Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 plans. She emphasized the potential for collaboration in various sectors, including renewable energies, technology, and critical infrastructure.

“We look forward to having Saudi Arabia as a credible partner and also tackling all the geopolitical challenges that we’re facing,” Valtonen stated.

Promoting Human Rights and Regional Stability

Valtonen reiterated Finland’s unwavering support for human rights and women’s empowerment, underscoring the importance of these values in bilateral relations with Saudi Arabia. She commended Saudi Arabia for playing a constructive role in maintaining stability in the Middle East.

Advocating for a Two-State Solution

As the Israel-Hamas conflict continues, Valtonen stressed the need for a two-state solution, emphasizing the recognition of a Palestinian state as a crucial step towards peace. Finland is closely monitoring the situation and aims to find the right time to support the recognition of Palestine.

Leading in Happiness and Equality

Valtonen also discussed Finland’s remarkable achievement as the happiest country in the world, attributing this success to Finland’s stable democracy, respect for human rights, and commitment to equality. She highlighted the Finnish mindset of inclusivity and equal opportunities for all individuals, regardless of background or identity.

“In Finland, you can trust everybody, and that sense of security and peace contributes to our happiness,” Valtonen concluded.
