Saudi Arabia Urges Global Efforts to Strengthen Cybersecurity

In a world where the need for a safe and reliable cyberspace is more urgent than ever, Saudi Arabia is calling on all nations to prioritize efforts to enhance cybersecurity to enable growth and prosperity.

Abdulaziz Al-Wasel, the Kingdom’s permanent representative to the UN, emphasized the importance of adopting a serious and practical approach in collaboration with the UN to unify international efforts in combatting cyber threats. This is crucial in safeguarding the vital interests of countries and national security.

Rapid Progress in Saudi Arabia’s Cybersecurity Sector

During a UN Security Council debate on evolving cyberspace threats, Al-Wasel highlighted the rapid progress and development of Saudi Arabia’s cybersecurity sector. Established as part of the Saudi Vision 2030 plan, the sector has made significant advancements domestically, regionally, and globally.

The Kingdom’s cybersecurity model is based on centralized governance and decentralized operability, falling under the responsibility of national authorities. It encompasses a comprehensive framework for addressing all aspects related to cybersecurity, including legislative, security-focused, economic, and developmental aspects.

International Recognition and Achievements

Saudi Arabia’s efforts in cybersecurity have not gone unnoticed, with the establishment of the National Institute for Cybersecurity and notable international achievements. The Kingdom ranked second globally and first in the Arab world, the Middle East, and Asia in the International Telecommunication Union’s 2020 Global Cybersecurity Index.

Recently, Saudi Arabia topped global cybersecurity rankings in the World Competitiveness Yearbook 2024, climbing to 16th place in the overall World Competitiveness Index. The country’s commitment to cybersecurity is further demonstrated through initiatives like the Global Cybersecurity Forum and regional cooperation efforts.

Regional and International Collaboration

Saudi Arabia is actively working to unify regional efforts in enhancing cybersecurity, leading to the establishment of a specialized ministerial committee for cybersecurity under the Gulf Cooperation Council. Additionally, the Kingdom played a key role in creating the Council of Arab Cybersecurity Ministers under the Arab League, with headquarters in Riyadh.

The UN has commended Saudi Arabia’s contributions to capacity-building exercises worldwide, with over 40 states and organizations participating in training initiatives. The Kingdom’s dedication to cybersecurity is paving the way for a safer and more secure digital future.
