Saudi Arabia Seeks Public Input on New Gas Distribution Law

In an effort to enhance efficiency and safety nationwide, Saudi Arabia has introduced a new law regulating gas distribution for residential and commercial purposes. The Ministry of Energy is now seeking public feedback on the proposed law, inviting individuals to share their opinions through a polling platform until April 28, as reported by Al-Ekhbariya.

Protecting Consumer Rights and Ensuring Compliance

The main goal of the law is to regulate activities in a manner that serves the public interest and protects the rights of consumers and licensees. It emphasizes compliance with approved policies related to gas supply for both residential and commercial purposes, as well as ensuring distribution in accordance with environmental standards and measures.

Promoting Investments and Fostering Competition

Furthermore, the law aims to encourage investments in the distribution network by creating a competitive environment that ensures a fair economic return. This initiative will enable consumers in different provinces of the Kingdom to receive dry gas and LPG.

Regulating Different Types of Gas

The draft law oversees the regulations for distributing dry gas, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and synthetic natural gas (SNG). Dry gas consists of methane and other components, while LPG refers to hydrocarbon products like propane and butane. SNG is a mixture produced by blending LPG with air to exhibit properties similar to dry gas.

Massive Gas Discovery in Jafurah Field

In February, Saudi Aramco announced a significant discovery of an additional 15 trillion standard cubic feet of gas in the Kingdom’s Jafurah Field, along with two billion barrels of condensate. This brings the total resources in the field to 229 trillion standard cubic feet of gas and 75 billion barrels of condensate, according to Saudi Arabia’s Energy Minister, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman. The discovery was made following international standards to ensure proper exploitation of the resources.
