Get to Know the Masterminds Behind Saudi Arabia’s Venice Biennale Showcase

An all-female team of curators leading the Saudi Pavilion at the Venice Biennale

In a groundbreaking move, an all-female group of curators is taking charge of the National Pavilion of Saudi Arabia at the 60th Venice Biennale this year. Jessica Cerasi, Maya El-Khalil, and assistant curator Shadin AlBulaihed are collaborating with artist Manal AlDowayan on her installation under the theme “Stranieri Ovunque — Foreigners Everywhere,” starting April 20.

Highlighting the work of Manal AlDowayan

AlDowayan, a prominent contemporary artist from Saudi Arabia, uses photography, sound, sculpture, and participatory practice to explore traditions, collective memories, and women’s status and representation. Her upcoming Venice Biennale installation will focus on engaging Saudi women through participatory elements.

Experience and expertise of the curatorial team

Cerasi, El-Khalil, and AlBulaihed bring a wealth of experience to the pavilion. Cerasi, based in Abu Dhabi, has previously collaborated with AlDowayan and aims to cultivate a love for contemporary art among diverse audiences. El-Khalil, the founder of Athr Gallery in Jeddah, has a history of showcasing emerging talent and fostering connections between the Gulf region and the global art scene.

Empowering women through art

The curators emphasize the importance of participatory practice in AlDowayan’s work, highlighting the collective energy and power of women coming together. AlBulaihed, from the Misk Art Institute, focuses on exploring local narratives and traditions, aligning with AlDowayan’s community engagement in Saudi Arabia.

Representation and empowerment

AlBulaihed expresses pride in showcasing Saudi artistic contributions on a global platform alongside established artists and curators. She sees this opportunity as a way to challenge stereotypes, empower female artists, and contribute to the international dialogue on art and culture.
