Jeddah University Grad’s Film Makes Waves at Tribeca Fest!

JEDDAH Graduate’s Film Chosen for Tribeca Film Festival

Dur Jamjoom’s graduation film from Effat University, titled “Kum Kum,” has been selected for the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival in New York, founded by actor Robert De Niro. Tribeca is renowned as one of North America’s most significant festivals, with this year’s event running from June 5 to June 16.

Jamjoom completed the film as her graduation project at Effat University in 2022, expressing her gratitude for being the first Saudi female included in the shorts program at the Tribeca Festival. She credits her incredible team for making this opportunity a reality.

“Kum Kum” is an autobiographical film that delves into the emotional journey following the untimely passing of Jamjoom’s best friend in 2012. Through diverse narratives, she weaves a cohesive story that showcases the profound impact of one person’s suffering on others.

Despite facing challenges during production, including uncooperative sea waves and technical difficulties with the camera housing, Jamjoom remained focused on her vision. She hopes the film will inspire audiences to find healing and resilience in the face of life’s challenges.

Exploring deeper meanings in the film, Jamjoom highlights the symbolic significance of the traditional Saudi game “Kum Kum,” representing life’s unexpected moments and the need for adaptation. The movie delves into themes of faith, suffering, resilience, and personal growth.

Mohamed Ghazala, chair of the Cinematic Arts School at Effat University, expressed pride in Jamjoom’s achievement, emphasizing the institution’s commitment to nurturing talented filmmakers. He sees her selection for the Tribeca Film Festival as a remarkable feat that showcases the university’s dedication to empowering students and bringing their stories to a global audience.

This accomplishment stands as a testament to the impactful teaching at Effat University, setting the stage for more groundbreaking achievements from talented students in the future.
