Taking over from Tony Chan, who served as president since 2018, Byrne is stepping into the role with a focus on advancing KAUST’s alignment with Vision 2030 and expanding its global research and academic influence.

With a wealth of experience leading top-ranked global universities and a visionary approach to scientific discovery, Byrne is eager to lead KAUST towards future progress and groundbreaking discoveries.

A Diverse Background

Prior to his appointment at KAUST, Byrne served as the global chief medical officer of Ramsay Health Care Group, expanding his leadership beyond academia into global healthcare governance and strategic advisory roles.

He also holds the position of vice chancellor’s distinguished fellow at The Australian National University and chairs various boards and think tanks.

Past Achievements

Before joining KAUST, Byrne was the president and principal of King’s College London, where he spearheaded the university’s Vision 2029 and positioned KCL at the forefront of the national agenda.

He also served as the president and vice chancellor of Monash University in Melbourne, showcasing his innovative spirit by establishing a new campus in Suzhou, China, and forming a significant alliance with the University of Warwick.

Byrne’s career has been marked by a dedication to impactful leadership and a commitment to driving progress in academia and beyond.
