Mind-Blowing Saudi Animation Takes Cannes by Storm: Makkah Worship in Pandemic Times

Saudi Film “Prostrate and Draw Near” Wins Animation Award at Cannes

JEDDAH: In a groundbreaking achievement, the Saudi film “Wa Isjod Wa Iqtareb” (“Prostrate and Draw Near”) clinched the prestigious “Animation That Matters” award at the Animaze Animation Day event held at Marché du Film, the industry networking section of the Cannes Film Festival.

Directed, produced, and written by the talented mother-daughter duo Suraya Al-Shehry and Nabila Abuljadayel, the film, created through Suraya Productions, delves into the unique period during the COVID-19 pandemic when cleaning staff replaced the usual international worshippers at the Grand Mosque in Makkah.

Revolutionizing Cinema with a Touch of Tradition

The film stands out not only for its integration of traditional art and 2-D animation but also for its compelling subject matter, as explained by Al-Shehry.

According to her, “The history of cinema lacks films that shed light on Makkah and the Holy Mosque, especially in the realm of animation. Collaborating with my daughter on this short animated film has been incredibly fulfilling and joyous.”

The film captures a pivotal moment in both global and Islamic history, showcasing the Grand Mosque devoid of its usual worshippers, except for the cleaning and maintenance staff who had a unique opportunity to pray during the pandemic when others couldn’t.

Reflecting on the two-year journey of creating the film, Abuljadayel expressed her gratitude for the chance to work alongside her mother, emphasizing that the experience was more rewarding than any accolade.

Award-Winning Artistry with a Message of Unity

The recognition received by the film resonates with its core message of celebrating shared humanity, as articulated by Al-Shehry.

She stated, “I strongly believe that authenticity and heartfelt expressions, whether through animation or art, connect with people. The success of this film is a testament to that belief.”

With one successful project under their belt, the creative duo is already planning their next venture, slated for completion next year.
