Saudi Arabia’s National Center for Wildlife Launches First Supervisory Council for Ibex Protected Area
Riyadh: In a groundbreaking collaboration with the Riyadh Region Municipality, Saudi Arabia’s National Center for Wildlife has officially inaugurated the first supervisory council for the Ibex protected area. This area encompasses the governorates of Howtat Bani Tamim and Al-Hariq, as reported by the Saudi Press Agency.
Enhancing Management Practices
The primary goal of this initiative is to engage local communities and relevant stakeholders in order to enhance management practices within the protected area. The National Center for Wildlife stated in a news release that this will align these practices with global standards.
Empowering the Community
Mohammed Qurban, the chief executive of NCW, emphasized the importance of this initiative. “Establishing the council empowers our neighboring community to contribute ideas and suggestions towards enhancing protection programs and conserving biodiversity within the protected area,” he said.
A Diverse Ecosystem
Covering approximately 1,841 square kilometers, the Ibex protected area is an extension of the Tuwaiq mountains. It is home to a variety of wildlife, including the Arabian oryx, Arabian wolf, rock hyrax, and numerous bird species such as lappet-faced vultures, bustards, and eagles.
Promoting Sustainable Resource Management
Global best practices advocate for local participation in safeguarding and preserving natural resources within protected areas. This fosters sustainable resource management while strengthening community attachment to these landscapes. Qurban stated, “Engaging with the community promotes operational excellence, governance, and efficiency, ensuring the sustainable use of our natural resources.”
Boosting Ecotourism and Economic Activities
The NCW has launched various programs in the Ibex protected area, including camping, hiking trails, and beekeeping. These efforts aim to boost ecotourism and foster economic activities for the local community, showcasing its distinctive natural and cultural heritage.
