Riyadh Summit: Former World Leaders Gather for Global Crisis Talks

Riyadh Talks: A Deep Dive into Global Issues

In a bustling two-day event in Riyadh, discussions are centered around a myriad of critical topics, from the world order to regional politics in the Middle East. The agenda includes delving into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, challenges of maritime security, and much more.

Hosted by the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies in collaboration with Nizami Ganjavi International Center and the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, the theme of the talks revolves around “The Middle East in a Changing World: uncertainties, risks, and opportunities.”

Ismail Serageldin, co-chair of Nizami Ganjavi International Center, shared his thoughts on the significance of such gatherings. “By having these kinds of sessions, we develop our own thinking,” he told Arab News. The platform allows influential figures, including former presidents and prime ministers, to share their insights and potentially mediate differing opinions.

The discussions also touch upon urgent matters like global dialogue, climate change, economies in the Middle East, and the region’s adaptation to artificial intelligence. The goal is to gather valuable insights for upcoming summits, such as the one in the United Nations in September and COP29 in Baku in November.

Keynote speakers like Prince Turki Al-Faisal and Vaira Vike-Freiberga lead the panel, alongside other notable figures such as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Waleed El-Khereiji and Maria Fernanda Espinosa, former president of the UN General Assembly.

The session addresses pressing issues beyond the Middle East, emphasizing the need for a global response to challenges worldwide. From crises in Gaza to humanitarian crises in Sudan, the discussions aim to foster coordination and sustainable solutions for peace.

Huda bint Abdulrahman Al-Halisi, a member of the Shoura Council, advocates for multilateralism and accountability in addressing global issues. She stresses the importance of bridging the gap between local and global efforts to achieve justice, development, and peace.

In an interview with Arab News, Ismail Serageldin highlights the imperative of revitalizing the United Nations as a beacon of global legitimacy. He calls for renewed efforts to empower the UN in its mission for global peace and security.
