Johnny Depp Directs “Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness”
JEDDAH: Hollywood icon Johnny Depp, known for his role in “The Brave,” is now stepping into the director’s chair once again for his latest project “Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness.”
The film follows Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani on a whirlwind journey through the streets of Paris during World War I.
In a lively roundtable discussion at Sharbatly Cultural House, Depp shared his excitement for this new venture, stating, “I have more freedom with this film. I feel like a giant toddler let loose. It’s a great opportunity to work with such a talented cast and crew.”
Decked out in his signature style, Depp revealed that he was initially approached about the project by Al Pacino, who suggested he take on the directorial role.
When asked why he was drawn to Modigliani’s story, Depp explained, “Modigliani represented an era of new possibilities. His vision resonates deeply with me.”
The movie, backed by the Red Sea International Film Financing program, is based on a play by Dennis McIntyre and stars Pacino, Riccardo Scamarcio, Stephen Graham, and more.
Depp’s leading actor, Scamarcio, praised Depp’s direction, describing it as free-flowing and respectful. “Working with Depp was a great experience. He allowed us to act freely without restrictions,” Scamarcio said.
Depp also discussed his partnership with the Red Sea International Festival, emphasizing their support and the creative freedom they provided for the project.
Looking ahead, Depp revealed his plans to collaborate with Saudi visual artist Ahmed Mater and explore the beauty of Saudi Arabia in his future films.
“I am fascinated by Saudi Arabia’s culture and history. The landscape in places like AlUla and Jeddah is something I want to capture on film,” Depp stated.
With a passion for storytelling and a deep appreciation for Saudi Arabian hospitality, Depp is eager to showcase the country’s rich heritage in his upcoming projects.
