Ahmed Mater: Documenting the Kingdom’s Transformation
In a stunning display of creativity, Saudi artist Ahmed Mater is using metal filings, X-rays adorned with calligraphy, and a grandiose mihrab transformed into a body scanner to capture the swift changes taking place in the kingdom.
From Tabuk to Abha: Mater’s Journey
Born in Tabuk in 1979, Mater grew up in Abha in southwestern Saudi Arabia, near the Yemeni border, during a time of significant social change in the region.
International Recognition
After his first exhibition outside the Kingdom at the British Museum in 2005, Mater went on to become the first artist to host a solo exhibition in the US in 2016. Now, he returns to England with his retrospective collection, “Ahmed Mater: Chronicles,” at Christie’s London until Aug. 22.
Art vs. Medicine
Despite starting his professional life in medicine, Mater eventually returned to his roots in art, describing it as the only voice he could continue with. He blends his medical background with his artistic vision to create thought-provoking pieces that reflect the changing landscape of Saudi Arabia.
Capturing Change Through Art
Mater’s artwork, from satirical to striking, documents the significant shifts happening in the kingdom. His pieces explore themes of social, religious, and economic transformation, providing viewers with a glimpse into a rapidly evolving society.
Pushing Boundaries
Mater’s innovative approach to art challenges conventional norms. In his piece “Boundary” (2024), he merges a mihrab with a body scanner, creating a striking commentary on modern security fears and the commercialization of religion.
Shaping the Future of Saudi Art
Mater believes that a collaboration between the public and private sectors is key to unlocking the full potential of Saudi Arabia’s cultural industries. As part of this movement, he is working on a large-scale installation in AlUla, set to open in 2025, that will pay homage to the Islamic golden age.
In Mater’s eyes, the Kingdom is experiencing a cultural renaissance, with a new generation shaping a bright future through art and creativity.
