Saudi climate envoy makes waves at Ocean Action event in Costa Rica

Saudi Arabia’s Climate Envoy Participates in High Level Event on Ocean Action

In a move to address pressing environmental issues affecting oceans, Saudi Arabia’s climate envoy joined the High Level Event on Ocean Action: Immersed in Change, as reported by the Saudi Press Agency.

Led by Saudi Minister of State Adel Al-Jubeir, the Kingdom’s delegation attended the event in the Costa Rican capital San Jose. The meeting, held from June 7 to 8, aims to shed light on globally important topics related to ocean conservation and to drive actionable measures forward.

Key topics to be discussed include fishing resources, combating ghost fishing gear, and promoting the blue economy, all of which will be addressed by an international panel.

The UN Ocean Conference in 2022 saw a significant amount of financial pledges, reaching billions of dollars, and approximately 50 high-level commitments. This included an investment of at least $1 billion to support the creation, expansion, and management of marine protected areas and Indigenous and locally governed marine and coastal areas by 2030, as stated by the UN.

The 2017 conference concluded with the adoption of a “Call for Action” and 1,300 voluntary commitments towards ocean conservation.
