Saudi Official Takes on Key Role in Global Food Safety
In a groundbreaking move, Saudi official Khalid Al-Zahrani has been appointed as the vice chair of the Codex Alimentarius Commission. This prestigious position is responsible for setting the standards that govern international food trade, ensuring that products are safe and protect consumer health.
Representatives from the Saudi Food and Drug Authority were thrilled to witness Al-Zahrani’s election at the commission’s 47th annual session in Geneva, Switzerland.
CEO Hisham Aljadhey expressed his pride in the achievement, stating, “This is a significant milestone for Saudi Arabia and a testament to our commitment to global food safety and standards.”
Al-Zahrani, who has been serving as the Codex chairperson for the Near East region since 2020, was reelected to the position in 2023. His expertise in international committees, including the World Trade Organization’s Technical Barriers to Trade, showcases his dedication to food safety.
Working closely with the Saudi Food and Drug Authority, Al-Zahrani aims to prioritize sustainability and enhance efficiency within food systems. The authority’s efforts were recognized by the World Health Organization in January for eliminating the use of industrially produced trans fats in food.
Al-Zahrani’s election underscores the exceptional quality of Saudi staff at the SFDA and the authority’s commitment to food safety legislation and oversight.
The Codex Alimentarius, known as the “Food Code,” is a vital collection of standards and guidelines related to food production, labeling, and safety. Published by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization and the WHO, these regulations shape the future of global food safety.
