In a recent report released by the General Authority for Statistics, Saudi Arabia’s annual inflation rate reached 1.5 percent in June compared to the same month last year. The main driving force behind this increase was the rising housing costs in the country.

Housing Costs Lead the Way

The report highlighted an 8.4 percent increase in the prices of housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels, significantly contributing to the overall inflation rate. Actual housing rents saw a substantial increase of 10.1 percent, with villa rentals rising by 7.9 percent, making them a significant factor in the inflation rate calculation.

Food and beverage prices saw an increase of 1.1 percent, driven by a 6.5 percent rise in vegetable prices. Prices in the restaurant and hotel sector rose by 2.4 percent, with accommodation services seeing a significant 9.8 percent increase.

In contrast, prices of furnishing and home equipment decreased by 3.7 percent, with furniture, carpets, and flooring prices falling by 6.0 percent. Clothing and footwear prices dropped by 3.6 percent, while transportation costs decreased by 2.7 percent, primarily due to a reduction in vehicle purchase prices.

Monthly Inflation Figures

On a monthly basis, the consumer price index recorded a slight 0.1 percent increase in June compared to the previous month. This increase was mainly driven by the rise in housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels by 0.5 percent.

Wholesale Price Index Insights

Another report from GASTAT revealed that the wholesale price index increased by 3.2 percent in June compared to the previous year. This increase was mainly driven by rises in basic chemicals and refined petroleum products.

In a separate bulletin, GASTAT highlighted notable shifts in average prices of goods and services across Saudi Arabia for June. Furnished apartments saw the highest increase at 22.47 percent, while local melons experienced the highest decrease at 16.39 percent.
