Stay Safe! Must-Know Tips for Hajj Pilgrims in Extreme Heat

Millions of Pilgrims Brave Extreme Heat to Perform Hajj in Makkah

The holy city of Makkah is buzzing with millions of Muslims from around the world who have gathered to perform the annual Hajj pilgrimage. However, this year’s pilgrimage is taking place during the hottest season in the Kingdom, raising concerns about the challenges that pilgrims may face.

Heatwave Worries: Elderly Pilgrims at Risk

Unpredictable weather can pose a threat to the health and safety of pilgrims, especially the elderly. With temperatures soaring, heat-related problems such as heat stroke and dehydration are a major concern. Last year, temperatures during Hajj reached a scorching 43-45 degrees Celsius, impacting the health of many pilgrims.

Health Risks: Protecting Pilgrims from the Heat

Ayman bin Salem Ghulam, CEO of the Saudi National Center for Meteorology, warned that temperatures at the holy sites could soar as high as 48 degrees Celsius this year. This poses a significant risk to elderly pilgrims with underlying medical conditions, making them more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.

Importance of Vaccination and Immune System

Dr. Fakhr Al-Ayoubi stressed the importance of vaccination before Hajj to protect the health of pilgrims. She explained how rising temperatures can weaken the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to infections. Strengthening the immune system is crucial to safeguard the health of pilgrims during the pilgrimage.

Government Measures to Ensure Pilgrim Safety

To address the challenges posed by the extreme heat, the Saudi government and Hajj authorities have implemented various measures. This includes expanding medical facilities, providing resting areas for pilgrims, and improving transportation and logistics to cater to the needs of pilgrims.

Shortened Sermons and Prayers to Ease Pilgrim Burden

Sheikh Abdulrahman Al-Sudais, head of the Presidency of Religious Affairs, directed imams to shorten Friday sermons and prayers during the Hajj season. This decision aims to alleviate the difficulties faced by worshippers due to the severe heat, ensuring their safety and well-being during this sacred pilgrimage.
