French Canadian scientist Michel Sadelain received the prestigious Breakthrough Prize for his groundbreaking research in genetically modifying immune cells to combat cancer. The event, dubbed as the “Oscars of Science”, was attended by tech moguls like Elon Musk and Bill Gates, as well as Hollywood stars such as Chastain, Robert Downey Jr., and Bradley Cooper.
Sadelain’s work paved the way for a revolutionary therapy known as CAR-T, which has shown remarkable success in treating certain blood cancers.
“This prize is an extraordinary recognition,” Sadelain expressed on the red carpet. “It’s all the more of an honor because … my scientific colleagues told me for a long time that it would never work.”
Sadelain shared the $3 million prize with American immunologist Carl June, who also made significant contributions to the field independently.
