Top Middle Eastern Airports Leading the Way in Sustainable Tech for Modern Travelers

Middle Eastern Airports Embrace Sustainability and Innovation

Riyadh: The latest study conducted by Bain & Co., a renowned management consulting firm, has revealed that Middle Eastern airports are taking significant steps to prioritize sustainability, eco-friendly infrastructure, and renewable energy in response to the pressing climate challenges.

Meeting Evolving Passenger Expectations

The report also emphasized the increasing demand for seamless and personalized travel experiences, driven by the evolving expectations of passengers. To meet these demands, regional airports are heavily investing in digital solutions that provide real-time communication and integrated mobility platforms.

Focus on Sustainability Initiatives

Akram Alami, Middle East head of utilities, aviation, sustainability & responsibility practices at Bain & Co., highlighted the growing emphasis on sustainability initiatives among airports in the region. He mentioned efforts such as achieving carbon-neutral certification, designing eco-friendly infrastructure, and adopting renewable energy to reduce environmental impact and meet passenger expectations for sustainable travel options.

Challenges Faced

The report also pointed out that airports in the region encounter obstacles in implementing sustainable practices, including high expenses for renewable technologies and regulatory issues. Ilya Yamshchikov, associate partner at Bain & Co. Middle East, highlighted challenges like high initial costs for green technologies, regulatory constraints, and the need for stakeholder alignment.

Technology Driving Growth

The adoption of technology and the commitment to meeting passenger expectations were identified as key factors driving the growth of airports in the region. Digital biometric screening and contactless services are streamlining security and boarding processes, while technologies like computed tomography baggage scanners and body scanners are expediting security checks without compromising safety.

Future Outlook

Mauro Anastasi, partner and a member of the Aviation practice at Bain & Co., predicted that these trends will continue shaping the development of airports, leading to more efficient and passenger-centric facilities. The transformation of airline operations and the overall travel experience will make air travel more accessible, enjoyable, and sustainable for future generations.

Partnerships and Initiatives

In December 2023, Riyadh Airports Co. in Saudi Arabia partnered with Cognizant to enhance its digital capabilities in various areas with the aim of improving the traveler experience. Additionally, Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation is working on finalizing a comprehensive systematic plan to address environmental sustainability in the aviation sector.

Meeting Passenger Expectations

A report released by GACA in April revealed that all airports in Saudi Arabia that received passenger complaints in March were resolved on time, showcasing the commitment of the airports to meeting passenger expectations.
