Warning: Saudi Minister Reveals Shocking Obstacle to Human Development – Freshwater and Sanitation Crisis

Saudi Minister of Economy and Planning Advocates for Access to Water and Sanitation

During the G20 Development Ministerial Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Saudi Minister of Economy and Planning, Faisal Al-Ibrahim, highlighted the crucial need for adequate freshwater and sanitation services to support human capital development.

Al-Ibrahim emphasized the impact of water inaccessibility on agriculture, global food security, and human conflict, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable solutions.

Saudi Arabia’s commitment to addressing global water challenges was exemplified by the establishment of the Riyadh-based Global Water Organization in September 2023, spearheaded by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Global Water Organization: A Platform for International Collaboration

Al-Ibrahim stressed that freshwater shortage is not just a policy concern but a basic human right essential for achieving Sustainable Development Goals. He called for increased international collaboration, innovative research, and more funding to support water accessibility projects.

The Global Water Organization will serve as a platform for knowledge exchange and technical assistance, facilitating the dissemination of best practices worldwide.

Saudi Arabia’s Role in G20 Development

Al-Ibrahim met with high-level officials from G20 countries and international organizations, participating in the Development Working Group session to coordinate efforts toward achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

He also engaged in discussions with Mathias Cormann, Secretary-General of the OECD, and other officials to enhance collaboration on economic and social challenges.

The minister highlighted the importance of elevating water issues within the G20 framework and leveraging the GWO to ensure universal access to water and sanitation.
