Xi urges boost in job opportunities for youth and migrant workers

President Xi Jinping Urges Efforts to Promote High-Quality Jobs for College Graduates and Migrant Workers

In a recent Politburo group study session, China’s President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of providing high-quality and sufficient employment opportunities for college graduates and migrant workers. The state media Xinhua reported on Tuesday that Xi called for a focus on the employment of young people, stating that it should be a top priority for the government.

Xi’s remarks highlighted the need for support measures and plans to promote job creation for college graduates and migrant workers, although specific details were not provided in the report. The latest official data showed a decrease in the survey-based jobless rate for 16-24 year-olds, excluding college students, indicating some progress in addressing youth unemployment.

The Chinese government has revised its methodology for calculating the youth jobless rate, aiming to better capture the employment situation for young people. Xi also emphasized the importance of supporting migrant workers, encouraging them to return to their hometowns and promoting entrepreneurship in rural areas.

Furthermore, Xi stressed the need to stabilize the income of individuals who have been lifted out of poverty and prevent a large-scale return to poverty due to unemployment. The government will also prioritize supporting companies and industries with strong job creation capabilities to boost overall employment opportunities.

According to data from the Human Resources Ministry, China has created 4.36 million new urban jobs in the first four months of the year, accounting for 36 percent of its annual job creation target. This highlights the government’s commitment to promoting employment and economic growth in the country.
